Major: History
Job Title: CEO and Founder of Ludwig Wessel & Associates
Location: Calgary, AB

What are the duties and responsibilities of your work?
I oversee a boutique executive search firm with offices in Vancouver, Calgary, Houston, Toronto and Vancouver.  I also do high level executive search and team build functions myself.

How can students prepare themselves at STU to work in your field? (eg. volunteer work, internships, extra-curricular activities, specific courses)
Nobody “chooses” executive search as a profession – it chooses you!  That said, research skills are incredibly important.

How has STU and your liberal arts education helped you in your career?
STU taught me how to read, write, research and communicate effectively.

Christa Priest
STU Degree: BA '96
Major: Political Science
Job Title: Senior Human Resources Generalist at Irving Oil
Location: Nova Scotia

What are the duties and responsibilities of your work?
I act as a strategic partner to leaders within my organization, providing support in areas of change management, recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, performance management, compensation management, and learning and development.

How can students prepare themselves at STU to work in your field? (eg. volunteer work, internships, extra-curricular activities, specific courses)
I would recommend that students take steps to increase job-specific knowledge, in areas such as employment legislation, attraction and retention, performance management, etc. On-the-job learning can be very beneficial, so seeking out a summer student placement, or internship with a human resources team would be ideal.  Students could also consider Associate Memberships with the Human Resources Association of NB.  This would provide access to human resources workshops/seminars, as well as the opportunity for networking with individuals in the field.

How has STU and your liberal arts education helped you in your career?
Through my education at STU, I learned a lot about people and relationship building.  I was able to develop key skills in research, critical thinking, and analysis, which I apply on the job every day.  I also developed strong communication skills, which are critical in my role. Beyond that, my education and time spent at STU helped me grow as an individual, teaching me responsibility and the value and impact of hard work.
