Great teachers can change lives. They’re leaders and mentors. They challenge and inspire. They help students discover how to become the best they can be.
St. Thomas University’s Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree programme prepares students to become that kind of teacher by combining professional courses with extensive classroom experience. Cooperative learning is explored to experience what it’s like to work as a member of a team. A variety of teaching techniques will enrich the learning experience of students.
The St. Thomas BEd is a post-secondary degree programme that builds on previous undergraduate education in arts, science, commerce or other comparable programmes. Students are expected to have well-developed analytical, research and communication skills before they enter the programme. In addition, they are expected to have background and expertise within a particular subject area(s) to teach content.
The intensive 60 credit-hour programme create demands on time, energy and abilities as it stimulates the kinds of work expected of public school teachers. The programme is delivered in one calendar year and offers the opportunity to concentrate in one of the three teaching areas: elementary, middle/secondary or French as a second language.
The programme is designed to encourage cross-disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning, and emphasizes inclusionary teaching approaches. Faculty have a very close relationship with BEd class members, carefully supervising internships and taking an active interest in students’ professional development.
