English Language and Literature—Honours/Major/Minor
Minor in English
To qualify for a Minor in English, a student must have completed 18 credit hours and fulfilled the following requirements:
- ENGL 1006
- ENGL 2013
- ENGL 2023 (before fall 2011) or ENGL 2033 and ENGL 2043 (after fall 2011)
- 3 credit hours at the 3000 level
Major in English
To qualify for a Major in English, a student must have completed 36 credit hours and
fulfilled the following requirements:
- ENGL 1006
- ENGL 2013
- ENGL 2023 (before fall 2011) or ENGL 2033 and ENGL 2043 (after fall 2011)
- at least 6 credit hours drawn from: 2643, 3236, 3306, 3316, 3326, 3336, 3386, 3396, 3503, 3506, 3656, 3666, 3706, 3823, 4393
- at least 6 credit hours in courses drawn from Authors & Authorship
- at least 3 credit hours in courses drawn from each of the following categories:
- Genres
- National or Regional Literature
- Cultural Studies
- at least 18 credit hours of the above must be in courses at the 3000 level

Major in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing
To qualify for a Major in English with a Concentration in Creative Writing, a student must
- ENGL 1006
- ENGL 2013
- ENGL 2023 (before fall 2011) or ENGL 2033 and ENGL 2043 (after fall 2011)
- at least 15 credit hours in Creative Writing courses, including:
- at least 3 credit hours drawn from 2103, 2123
- at least 6 credit hours drawn from 3103, 3113, 3123, 3133
- ENGL 4133
- at least 6 credit hours drawn from 2643, 3236, 3306, 3316, 3326, 3336, 3386, 3396, 3503, 3506, 3656, 3666, 3706, 3823, 4393
- at least 6 credit hours in courses drawn from Authors & Authorship
- at least 3 credit hours in courses drawn from each of the following categories:
- Cultural Studies
- Genres
- National or Regional
- At least 18 credit hours of the above requirements must be in courses at the 3000 level.
Students must confer with the Creative Writing Advisor, Dr. Kathleen McConnell, before declaring a Concentration in Creative Writing.

Major in English with a Concentration in Drama
To qualify for a Major in English with a Concentration in Drama, a student must have
completed 36 credit hours and fulfilled the following requirements:
- ENGL 1006
- ENGL 2013
- ENGL 2023 (before fall 2011) or ENGL 2033 and ENGL 2043 (after fall 2011)
- ENGL 2213
- ENGL 2233
- ENGL 2523
- ENGL 3216
- ENGL 4213
- at least 6 credit hours of pre-1800 dramatic literature
- at least 6 credit hours of post-1800 dramatic literature
- at least 6 credit hours in courses drawn from Authors & Authorship
- at least 3 credit hours in courses drawn from each of the following categories:
- Genres (other than drama)
- National or Regional Literature
- Cultural Studies
- at least 18 credit hours of the above must be in courses at the 3000 level

Honours in English
To qualify for Honours in English, a student must have completed 60 credit hours, maintained
at GPA of at least 3.0 in English, and fulfilled the following requirements:
- ENGL 1006
- ENGL 2013
- ENGL 2023 (before fall 2011) or ENGL 2033 and ENGL 2043 (after fall 2011)
- ENGL 3823
- ENGL 3833
- at least 12 credit hours drawn from: 2643, 3236, 3306, 3316, 3326, 3336, 3386,
3396, 3503, 3506, 3656, 3666, 3706, 3823, 4393
- at least 6 credit hours in courses drawn from each of the following categories:
- Genres
- Authors and Authorship
- National or Regional Literature
- Cultural Studies
- Literary Theory and Method
- at least 3 credit hours in courses drawn from Creative and Performative
- 12 credit hours must be in courses designated as Honours Seminars (two Seminarsmay not be taken concurrently)
- at least 30 credit hours of the above must be in courses at the 3000 level

Please note: The Honours Programme is restricted to 30 students annually.

guarantee acceptance into the Programme.
