"The unexamined life is not worth living." These words of Socrates, spoken 2400 years
ago, have inspired philosophers of western civilization ever since. Our Department also is
engaged in the pursuit of the life worth living and of the knowledge born of wonder
about the human condition.
Courses offered by the Department are intended to acquaint students with the historical
development of philosophical questions and their proposed solutions in western culture.
In particular, we wish to consider the contributions of thinkers within the Christian (and
especially Roman Catholic) tradition to philosophical dialogue. The Honours Programme
is designed and recommended for those students contemplating graduate studies in philosophy.
The Department’s offerings may, with appropriate permission, be complemented by the
resources of the Department of Philosophy of the University of New Brunswick.
