Coordinator, ESL Programme (11-Month Contract, Half-Time)

St. Thomas University invites applications for the position of Coordinator of the ESL Programme. The approximate start date for the contract is August 1, 2012. The end date will be June 30, 2013.

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution whose roots are in the faith and tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. With a full-time enrolment of 2,500, its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees. The faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the university holds four Canada Research Chairs.

Reporting to the Dean of Social Sciences, the successful candidate will serve as the principle spokesperson and advocate for the programme and will be responsible for the development, implementation and delivery of the University’s English Second Language Programme. The successful candidate will develop and implement the advising process for students in the ESL Programme and develop curriculum for the ESL courses. The Coordinator of the ESL Programme will manage the hiring process for instructors for the programme, and hire and supervise tutors in the programme.

Creating and maintaining a climate of success for ESL students is a key goal for this position and represents an essential component of the University’s ongoing commitment to working with students where English is the student’s second language. In carrying out the responsibilities of this position, the successful candidate will make recommendations to the Dean of Social Sciences regarding the development and delivery of courses in the programme.

A doctorate in applied linguistics or related field is preferred; a master’s degree will be considered. Up-to-date knowledge of the ESL field, including current pedagogical theory and policies in English for Academic Purposes, and five years experience working in a University setting are essential requirements for this position. The ideal candidate is someone who has an excellent understanding of the University’s academic and administrative operations.

Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills are essential for this position. The successful candidate will be highly motivated and able to work independently and have experience managing multiple projects with limited direction.

The salary for this position is $30,000. This is a half-time position, normally 17.5 hours per week.
