Facilities Assistant

St. Thomas University is an undergraduate, liberal arts institution whose roots are in the faith and tradition of the Roman Catholic Church. With a full-time enrolment of 2,400, its students graduate with Bachelor of Arts, Applied Arts, Education, and Social Work degrees. The faculty members are distinguished teachers, researchers and scholars, and the university holds four Canada Research Chairs.

Reporting to the Facilities Supervisor the Facilities Assistant performs labourer duties as well as clerical duties.

Key responsibilities related to the labourer role are: performing maintenance tasks including landscaping, carpentry, painting, minor repairs and construction from basic instructions; assisting with snow removal; moving and assembling furniture; and performing a variety of tasks related to set-up for University events.

Duties related to the clerical role are: typing correspondence; acting as receptionist as required, responding to frequent and varied needs of employees, students and visitors; operating office equipment; sorting, posting and distributing mail; and sending and receiving courier packages and registered mail.

The successful candidate will have a high school diploma (grade 12) or GED; knowledge and experience using a variety of hand tools; and experience using power equipment such as mowers and snow blowers. A demonstrated ability to organize and complete work assignments in a timely manner and work independently are essential requirements for this position. The successful candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and a good knowledge of modern office equipment, processes and techniques. Experience using word processing and spreadsheet programs is essential for this position. Experience working in an automated office environment, training and experience in carpentry and painting, and office or business administrative skills would be an asset.

The classification and annual salary range of this position is A3, $28,667 - $39,518. The hours of work are 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM (40 hours/week), Monday to Friday. It is important to note that the successful candidate will be required to work overtime occasionally, particularly during inclement weather.
