How to connect?

New and existing students can connect to any internet connection in the residences. You can connect via LAN cable or WiFi (if you are in range of a connection). Both connections are plug-n-play and require no additional settings to connect to the internet.

Before calling for technical support with your internet connectivity issue please try the following common resolutions.

Are you trying to connect via LAN cable?

1. If you were just connected at one location and have just moved to another, try rebooting your laptop.

2. Ensure the Power, DSL and Internet lights are all on. Ensure Port 1-4 is on depending on which port you are plugged into. If the lights are not on check all cables are securely plugged in. If the Power, DSL and Internet lights still won’t come on please call the Bell Aliant Helpdesk.

3. If others are able to connect via LAN cable to the same modem try their cable as there could be an issue with the one you are trying to use.

4. Ensure you are getting an IP address from the modem.

For XP, Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double-click on the Network Connections. Right-click on Local Area Connection and then click on status. Once the Status window opens ensure your IP address is (192.168.2.x). Click on the Repair button to refresh your IP this will ensure you have a proper connection.

For Vista or 7, Go to the Windows logo > Control Panel > Network and Internet and double-click on Network and Sharing Center. Click on the Local Area Connection and then click on details. Once the details window opens ensure your IP address is (192.168.2.x). If it is not close the details window and click on diagnose button to refresh your IP this will ensure you have a proper connection.

5. If you have an IP and are unable to surf, ensure you do not have a Firewall that is blocking the connection. If you have a Firewall installed. Try disabling it.

6. If you are connected and are able to surf but are experiencing slow speeds this could be due to multiple people connected and downloading larger files or online gaming.

7. Lastly you can try to do a power cycle on the modem. PLEASE NOTE: This will disconnect anyone that is currently connected to the modem. To do this simply unplug the modem from the outlet or remove the power cord from the back of the modem for a few seconds and then plug it back in and wait for all of the lights to come back on(about 30 seconds). Once the modem is back on you can try to reconnect.

Are you trying to connect via WiFi?

1. If there are no wireless connections showing in range, ensure wireless is enabled on your laptop and try to refresh the list or move within range of the wireless connection and try to refresh. Double-click on the connection with the highest signal strength. The WiFi connections provided are not password protected and you are free to use any listed.

2. If you continue to not see any wireless connections in the list, you can try to connect to the modem via LAN cable. If the LAN connection works you could have a problem with your Wireless Network Card.

3. If you are connected wirelessly and are having trouble with surfing/speeds (this could be due to multiple people connected to the same connection). Try to connect to the next wireless connection in the list or use your wired connection.

If you have tried all of the above suggestions and are still unable to connect you can contact the Bell Aliant helpdesk at
