Exchange Programme

Studying abroad on academic exchange is enormously rewarding, giving you first-hand experience of studying and living in another culture.

St. Thomas offers academic exchange opportunities in North America, South America, Europe, Asia and Australia. These exchanges provide the opportunity to explore new languages, cultures and customs while earning university credits.

A limited number of modest student bursaries are available.

Participating Universities

St. Thomas has exchange agreements with several universities and we encourage you to explore their websites to learn more about the opportunities available to you.

Australian Catholic University - Australia - http://www.acu.edu.au
Hokusei Gakuen University - Sapporo, Japan - http://www.hokusei.ac.jp/
Orebro University - Orebro, Sweden - http://www.oru.se/
Universidad del Norte - Argentina - http://www.unsta.edu.ar/
Universidad FASTA – Argentina - http://www.ufasta.edu.ar/
Universidad Santo Tomas - Chile - http://www.ust.cl/
Université du Quebec - Quebec - http://www.uqam.ca
University of Malta - http://www.um.edu.mt/
University of St. Thomas - Houston, Texas - http://www.stthom.edu/

Our partnerships with these universities allow you to pay your regular tuition to St. Thomas while studying abroad, instead of paying international student tuition fees. If you already hold a scholarship, you will be able to maintain it (subject to normal renewal requirements). You are responsible for your own travel and living expenses, however, and may be required to purchase extra health insurance.

St. Thomas requires prior approval of the courses you take while on exchange to ensure that you will know ahead of time which credits are eligible for transfer to your St. Thomas degree.

Programme Requirements

  • Normally, you must be going into second or third year (that is, you must have completed between 30 and 60 credit hours of courses by the time you go on exchange). Some universities or programmes have specific requirements.
  • You must have an annual grade point average of at least 3.0.
  • You must submit a complete application by January 15 of the year preceding the exchange.

Please note that meeting the minimum criteria and deadline date does not guarantee acceptance.

How to Apply

Obtain an application package from the Registrar’s Office or see the form below.

  • Ask a professor who knows your work well to write a letter of recommendation.
  • Enclose a cover letter of at least 250 words explaining why you think you would be a good candidate for an international exchange, and what you hope to gain from the experience.
  • Include an unofficial copy of your transcript.

Applications will be reviewed by an approval committee.
