Former Tommies women’s hockey forward Andrea Fischer has been named to the Swiss national team for the upcoming world championships in Burlington, Vermont April 7-14.
Fischer, described as very hard working and dedicated by her St. Thomas teammates, played from 2009-2011 at STU. She racked up 10 goals and eight assists in her two seasons as a Tommie.
Her work ethic earned her the honour of most improved player on the Tommies in the 2010-2011 season.
“I am so pleased for Andrea,” says STU head coach Peter Murphy.
“She was one of the hardest workers I have ever had at St. Thomas and that says a lot. She was always looking to improve and her hard work has certainly paid off. By her second year with us, she had become a real scoring threat. I know she will enjoy this opportunity and look to cement a role with the national team for years to come.”
She’s also the second Tommie to play for Team Switzerland. Her former teammate Lucrece Nussbaum played for the Swiss national team in both the world championships and 2010 Olympic Games.
The Swiss team enters next week’s tournament in a pool with Germany, Slovakia, and Sweden. Fischer sees her first tournament action Saturday, April 7 when her team takes on Germany.
