Academic Support

Student Advising

If you need advice about academics, careers, or financing your education, then visit the Academic Advising Team in Student Services. Here’s a sample of the things we can help with:

  • Course selections
  • Degree audits (formal and informal)
  • Career plans
  • Financial resources information
  • Referrals to various resources

Appointments are best, but if you need immediate attention please come see us right away. We’re located on the third floor of George Martin Hall. Do you have a quick question that doesn’t require a meeting? You can chat with us between 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm (Monday to Friday) at: advising@stu.ca or write to us anytime at our STU e-mail addresses. If we don’t have the answer, we’ll find someone who does.

Departmental Advisors

If you have questions regarding a particular major or honours, departmental advisors are available to answer your questions. Please see the current departmental advisor list.

Peer Tutoring

Peer tutoring is available to all students during the academic year. It is a great way to get some extra help with your courses. Every student is eligible to receive 2 hours of tutoring per week in any of a number of academic subjects. Tutors are available for all academic disciplines, and tutors can also help you learn to navigate in the library or the computer lab.

Students should email the tutors to make contact. It is helpful if you include your availability in the initial email message so the tutors can respond with an appropriate time and place to meet with you. Please be aware that individual tutors are also students, so it is possible that some tutors might be very busy on certain weeks. Do not wait until the last minute to seek help!

Please see the current tutor list.

The Writing Centre

The Writing Centre is a free service available to students. It offers help with all aspects of the writing process in any course. Bring in your papers and class assignments for help from a tutor. Much more than a proof-reading service, we’ll work to help you develop the writing skills you’ll need to be successful.

Meetings are an hour long. You meet with a graduate student who is highly skilled and experienced in university-level writing. Bring your work with you – at whatever stage. You should also bring the instructions/guidelines for the assignment in order to have a productive writing session.

Visit Student Services on the second floor of the Welcome Building to make an appointment for the Writing Centre. The centre can be found in Edmund Casey Hall, Room 102. The hours of operation are posted on the door. Students in English Second Language courses must consult ESL staff for writing support.

Please contact Shauna Foote, Academic Advisor (Assistant Registrar), at shaunas@stu.ca or (506) 452-0616.

Exchange Programmes

Studying in a different country is an exciting way to enhance a liberal arts education. St. Thomas offers exchange programmes with universities in Sweden, Malta, Australia, United States (Texas), China, Japan and Chile, to name a few. Several President's Travel Awards are available to support students who are selected to participate in an exchange programme either for a semester or a full academic year.
