Award-winning and internationally-renowned lutist Michel Cardin will perform a baroque music recital at St. Thomas University. The recital will include works by Silvius Leopold Weiss, a celebrated Baroque composer of lute music. The concert will take place on Monday, June 2, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in the McCain Hall Auditorium.
Prior to the recital, Dr. Willis Noble, Fine Arts lecturer at St. Thomas, will give a brief talk outlining some of the performance features found in the music that will be performed by Cardin. His talk, “Re-Discovering the Baroque”, will begin at 7 p.m.
Cardin teaches guitar and lute in the department of music at the Université de Moncton. He has given concerts, conferences and masterclasses in North America, South America, Europe, Japan and Africa.
Cardin has been called a refined master of music with charismatic sonority. He has played as a soloist with Symphony Nova Scotia. As a theorist, he performed under William Christie, Andrew Parrott and Christian Mendoze. He has also played with Musica Divina, Les Idées Heureuses and Réjouissance ensembles. He founded the Ensemble Baroque Montéclair in 1990.
Along with many radio and television performances, including Les beaux Dimanches, he has taken part in important shows throughout Canada, including the Acadian World Congress and the International Francophonie Summit. He has also appeared at the Eloizes and East Coast Music Awards shows. He has recorded 12 solo CDs featuring baroque music.
Admission is free and the recital is open to the public.
