John Edward Cushnie was born and raised deep in the New Brunswick wilderness. Interested at an early age in developing an understanding of the natural world, he received no formal education until attending Mount Allison University at age 19.

Subsequently he studied at the Glasgow School of Art in Scotland and received a BFA from NSCAD University and an MFA from the University of Western Ontario.

In addition to maintain an active painting practice John is currently serving as the director of Gallery Connexion, Fredericton’s artist-run centre.

John's work continues to express his early search for an understanding of the natural world, combined with a contemporary exploration of the psychological space of the rural environment. His work is unique in that it presents an exploration of the rural wilderness environment from a position of intimacy –- a view from within, instead of that of the classical landscape seen from afar –- an intimacy that is no doubt a product of John's formative years spent in a secluded wilderness environment.
