Admission Requirements for Canadian High School Applicants

Canadian high school applicants must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • high school graduation
  • minimum average of 70% on five successfully completed Grade 12 academic courses including Grade 12 academic English (or French for applicants from Francophone schools)
  • four remaining Grade 12 academic electives from the list below

Applicants with admission averages between 60 and 69% are considered for admission as First-Year Studies students. These students follow the curriculum prescribed for all first-year students. If they achieve an average of “C” or higher on their first-year programme, they are eligible to enroll in the Bachelor of Arts programme at the end of the first year with all successfully completed credits transferred to their Arts programme.

In addition to the above elective courses, applicants may offer the following New Brunswick courses as electives:  History 112: Modern History; Geography 110: Physical Geography; Mathematics 112: Functions and Relations. Comparable courses from other provinces or countries may also be acceptable.

High School Applicants from Ontario and Quebec

Ontario applicants must have a minimum average of 70% on five courses (4U or acceptable 4M courses) with subject distribution as for other Canadian applicants including the compulsory English 4U credit. Quebec applicants must have completed a Grade 12 programme or received a high-school-leaving certificate (Grade 11) and successfully completed one year of CEGEP. Subject distribution and other minimum requirements are as for other Canadian applicants. Applicants who have completed an appropriate two year CEGEP programme may be considered for advanced standing to a maximum of 30 credit hours.

Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate Applicants

Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and GCE Advanced Level applicants presenting official documentation of grades of 4 or 5 on Advanced Placement (AP) tests, grades of 5, 6 or 7 on individual higher-level International Baccalaureate (IB) subjects, or final grades of “C” or higher on GCE Advanced-Level courses are eligible for transfer credit. AP students are eligible for a maximum of 18 credit hours in transfer credit while IB diploma and GCE Advanced- Level students are eligible for a maximum of 30 credit hours on a 120 credit-hour degree programme.

Students granted transfer credit for AP, IB, and GCE Advanced-Level courses are advised to consult graduate and professional schools to determine the impact that this non-university credit award will have on their future academic plans.

English Language Proficiency

Applicants whose primary language is not English must submit evidence of proficiency in English by writing one of the following tests:

Official test scores must be submitted directly to the Admissions Office by the testing centre. St. Thomas University's ETS number is 0803.

Students who meet the following minimum English Language Proficiency scores and the St. Thomas academic admission requirements are eligible for the ESL programme:

  • TOEFL 61 (Internet-based)
  • TOEFL 173 (Computer-based)
  • TOEFL 500 (Paper-based)
  • MELAB 69
  • IELTS 5.0

Students with TOEFL scores of:

  • TOEFL 88-89 (Internet-based)
  • TOEFL 230 (Computer-based)
  • TOEFL 570 (Paper-based)
  • MELAB 80
  • IELTS 6.5

are eligible to take five regular academic courses but may take integrated and assisted courses if they wish.
