Cheer Off

A favorite Welcome Week tradition, the Cheer Off is the first chance new students are given to show their residence or off-campus pride. All residence and off-campus students learn cheers demonstrating their spirit. During the Cheer Off, students are given the chance to show off their pride by out-cheering the others. Spring Convocation 2009 - May 10, 2009

Parents, friends and faculty gathered to celebrate the success of graduating St. Thomas University students on Sunday, May 10 at the 99th Spring Convocation. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to 490 graduates in arts, applied arts, social work, certificates of honours and certificates of native language immersion. Honourary Doctors of Letters were bestowed on fiddler Ned Landry, writer Lee Maracle and writer Ron Rolheiser, who delivered the address to graduates. (Photos by Keith Minchin, Faces of Our World)

Primavera 2009

St. Thomas University recently celebrated spring at its annual Primavera fundraiser. With matching funds from the Province of New Brunswick, the event raised $95,000 which will be directed to a special Millennium Bursary named in memory of John McKendy, professor of sociology, who died tragically in 2008. Graduation Dinner 2009

April 6 was a special day for graduating students at St. Thomas. At the end of the semester and on the verge of Spring Convocation, the grad class of 2009 gathered for an evening to mark the end of their four-year journey together and to honour many outstanding student scholars and leaders.
Tommies 2009 Athletics Banquet

St. Thomas University’s Athletics Department recently hosted its annual awards banquet to honour the dedication, determination and leadership qualities of its 200 student athletes. STU Relay for Life Raises $10,000

This year's Relay for Life was a huge success! Over 170 participants, four survivors, and 25 volunteers came out and showed support at the all-night event. Walkers gathered in Sir James Dunn Hall to hear talks from organizer Matthew Sheriko and the other cancer survivors. Music and entertainment kept teams on their toes. Science and Technology Studies Lecture - "Empty Cages: An Introduction to Animal Rights"

American philosopher and animal rights theorist Dr. Tom Regan delivered the Science and Technology Studies lecture at St. Thomas University in March. Regan is Emeritus Professor of Philosophy, North Carolina State University in North Carolina and has been nominated for the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He also co-founded The Culture and Animals Foundation, a non-profit.
Student Research and Ideas Fair 2009

Facebook security, sexual harassment policy, adoption, cultural jamming in advertising, tourism promotion during wartime, and conservatism and environmentalism were some of the research topics presented by students at St. Thomas University's annual Research and Ideas Fair on March 21st. As in past years, two students were selected to travel to the University of St. Thomas at Houston to participate in that university’s fair.
T-Ring Ceremony 2009

In an annual tradition, the graduating class gathered to remember their university experience and acknowledge their transformation as individuals, thinkers and citizens of the world. During the T-Ring Ceremony, they retired their T-Pins for the honoured T-Ring. Alumni Adam Robertson (BA '06) and Coleen Comeau (BA'93, BEd'94) were guest speakers.
Tommies ACAA Champs

For the first time since 1993-94, the STU Tommies Basketball team are the ACAA Champs. STU were victorious over the defending champion MSVU Mystics by a score of 60-53. At the ACAA Awards Banquet, Alicia Sterling became the first STU Tommie to be named league MVP, while Hayley Doney was named a 1st Team All Conference and Kerrin Everett was named to the second team. Head Coach Fred Connors was named the ACAA Coach of the Year.
Great Ideas Lecture

Noted Canadian author David Adams Richards delivered the fourth annual Great Ideas Lecture on Jan. 22. Richards talked about the concept of the scapegoat in “Throwing the Second Stone - Taking Aim at the Scapegoat in Our Society”. While at St. Thomas University, Richards will also meet with several Great Ideas and Aquinas Programme classes that have studied his work this year.
STU Revue

The STU Revue is an annual variety show that showcases the talent of the St. Thomas University community. On February 10, in the Kinsella Auditorium, many students, faculty, and friends gathered to show their support. Proceeds from this year's show went towards helping Kofi Ampong, a graduate of STU. The event had performances by: STU Jazz, UNB/STU Dancers, The Station Agents, Matt Buckley, Jill Carlson, Jenna Barnes and Cam MacLean, Katie Malone, Jordan Sipprell & John Stymietst, Daniel Blais, Gemma Marr, Brittany Woodworth, and many more…
Dalton Camp Lecture, 2009

On Jan 28, Kenneth Whyte, a veteran of the newspaper and magazine business shared his experiences dodging financial ruin while chasing headlines. Whyte’s talk, “Be Interesting, Or Else,” was taped for broadcast on CBC Radio’s Ideas.
Study Shots 2008

As the holidays quickly approach, students get together in the various study locations on campus in order to prepare for exams. St. Thomas wishes all students great success in finishing up their first semester courses and hopes all students will have a wonderful holiday vacation.
Noël A. Kinsella Auditorium

Senator Noël A. Kinsella was the guest of honour as faculty, alumni, staff, and friends of St. Thomas University gathered for the official renaming of the auditorium in the award-winning Margaret Norrie McCain Hall.
Trick or Eat 2008

Trick or Eat put a new spin on Halloween when costumed students canvassed their neighborhoods collecting food for local social service agencies in order to help the 2.5 million people who go hungry in Canada each day.
Goose Lane Launch, 2008

Goose Lane Editions celebrated the fall literary season with a launch party at St. Thomas University in the Black Box Theatre on October 30. Featured authors included: Herb Curtis, author of The Americans Are Coming, Melynda Jarratt, author of Captured Hearts: New Brunswick’s War Brides, Philip Lee, author of Bittersweet: Confessions of a Twice-Married Man, Bob Mersereau, author of The Top 100 Canadian Albums, and Jacques Poitras, author of Beaverbrook: A Shattered Legacy.

Election Forum Discussion 2008

On October 7th, 2008, St. Thomas University invited voters and students to attend a forum discussion on topics of interest in the Fredericton riding for the recent federal election. The event was presented by The Daily Gleaner and St. Thomas University’s Political Science Department. The election buzz floated throughout the room as people from all walks of life presented questions to the candidates of each party for the riding. Moderator Peter Haggert kept the questions moving and all speakers represented their parties well. The packed auditorium was so engaged, in fact, that after the event ended talks and recaps continued in the lobby. (Photos by Alex Solak)
Maritime Open Chess Tournament 2008

On October 10th-13th, 2008, St. Thomas University hosted the Annual Maritime Open Chess Tournament. The top prize winner took home $300. As part of the competition, New Brunswick’s highest rated chess champion, Bill Bogle, played several opponents to heat up the event. (Photos by Alex Solak)
STU Cross Country Running Team

The Cross Country Running Team began the season with their first ACAA meet September 20th at O’Dell Park. The women’s team came in second overall, with St. Thomas athletes taking first and second place. Nicole Badry was first place winner of the women’s 5K race, with a time of 21:31. Olivia Long placed second with a time of 21:53. The men’s team placed third overall and Zachary Nicholson came in 5th place with a time of 33:00. The women's team won the championship last season, and the men's team finished second place last year. (Photos by Alex Solak)

Summer Convocation 2008

More than 170 St. Thomas students celebrated their university graduation at the summer convocation on July 17, 2008. Holocaust Centre

St. Thomas University established a Holocaust Centre, directed by Human Rights professor Dr. Michael McGown, to raise greater awareness of the plight of Holocaust victims during the Second World War, as well as other genocides throughout the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. The new centre will co-operate with other organizations such as the Simon Wiesenthal Centre, the Canadian Council of Christians and Jews, the Canadian Centre for Diversity, and Yad Vashem to deliver educational programmes for students and professional groups, provide scholarships, organize seminars and conferences, and sponsor public lectures by scholars. The St. Thomas community celebrated St. Partick's Day at the St. Pat's Day +1 benefit concert featuring celtic fiddler Kathleen Gorey-McSorley, keyboard and accordian player Carolyn Holyoke, guitarist Gary Pugh, pianist Meghan Underhill and step dancers Erin and Melissa MacDonald.
First Annual Human Rights Conference

St. Thomas University human rights students held the first annual Human Rights Conference on April, 5, 2008. The students explored topics ranging from humanitarian issues, contemporary forms of slavery, philosophical issues in human rights, and genocide. Student Research and Ideas Fair 2008

St. Thomas University hosted its fifth annual Student Research and Ideas Fair on Friday, April 4, 2008. More than 50 students showcased their research, ranging from the environment, residential schools, children overcoming bipolar disorder, intensive behavioural intervention for children with autism, New Brunswick’s forest policy, the United Nation’s intervention during the genocides in Bosnia and Rwanda, and special education plans in the province, among others. Internationally Renowned Guitarist Tali Roth Plays at STU

During her visit to Fredericton, internationally renowned guitarist Tali Roth taught musicians more than just a few chords. The Israeli-American guitarist was at St. Thomas University on February 27 and 28 for Latin American Guitar Week, and she shared the charm of Latin American music with students and members of the public. During her residency at St. Thomas, Roth visited classrooms, gave two master classes and performed a free solo recital. At the recital, she premiered a prelude and fugue composed by STU professor and Fine Arts programme director Martin Kutnowski. (Photos by Samantha Shea)
Winter at St. Thomas University

Whether you’re enjoying a walk on St. Thomas’ picturesque campus, or making snow angels in the freshly fallen snow in the courtyard, one thing is certain: it’s winter time at St. Thomas. Although it’s time to bundle up in a few more layers of clothing, Maritime winters aren’t extremely cold. That’s what sets Fredericton, New Brunswick apart from other regions of the country. We enjoy a moderate climate and four very distinct seasons without the extreme temperatures of the Canadian North or the American South. Study Week- December 2007

St. Thomas students were busy studying before the Christmas exams, and they took advantage of McCain Hall's new study centre. Leather-topped desks are lit by individual lamps, and comfortable upholstered chairs line the walls. Large windows offer a stunning view of campus and downtown Fredericton. If a quiet place to study is a must for your academic success, the McCain Hall study centre is a practical and beautiful option. Chantal Hébert Delivers the 2007 Dalton Camp Lecture in Journalism

Canadian columnist and political commentator Chantal Hébert and CBC Radio’s Ideas producer Bernie Lucht spoke to St. Thomas University journalism students about reporting and storytelling in October. Hébert was in Fredericton to deliver the fifth Dalton Camp Lecture in Journalism at St. Thomas University. The lecture was taped for national broadcast on CBC Radios’ Ideas on November 27. This year’s lecture, Canada in the Post-Unity Era: How Quebec is (Once Again) Redesigning the Canadian Political Landscape, explored Quebec’s role in Canadian politics.
Live at 5, Live at STU- November 13, 2007

Lights, camera, action! St. Thomas University students headlined CTV's Live at 5 and the 6 o'clock news in November when Bruce Frisko and Steve Murphy were on campus to film the two shows live. Hundreds of students came out to meet the on-air personalities, say hello to their moms and show off their school spirit. Dawn Perrier won the Best 'Hi Mom' Sign Contest with her images of hands spelling out 'hi mom' in sign language. St. Thomas University is home to many aspiring journalists. Its journalism department uses hands-on, technical training to teach future reporters about the craft of storytelling.
