Canadian journalist and author Roy MacGregor will deliver the Dalton Camp Lecture in Journalism at St. Thomas University on Wednesday, Nov. 8 at 7:30 pm in George Martin Hall.

The public is invited to attend the lecture which will be taped for national broadcast on the CBC Radio’s Ideas.

In his lecture, Witness to a Country, MacGregor will explore the special entrée journalists are given to individuals and events using examples such as Pierre Trudeau’s funeral train, Maurice “Rocket” Richard’s lying-in-state, Elijah Harper Jr. on the eve of the Meech Lake vote and the birth of self-government among the James Bay Cree. MacGregor also contends that the “story” is often among ordinary Canadians.

“In Roy MacGregor’s thirty-four year career, he has expertly covered news, politics and sports, and for his ability to explain our country, he has been called the heir to Peter Gzowski,” said Philip Lee, Director of the St. Thomas University journalism programme. “His page 2 column in The Globe and Mail is a must-read across the country. I know our students are looking forward to working with him.”

While on campus, MacGregor, along with Paul Kennedy and Bernie Lucht, the host and producer of Ideas, will conduct various classes and seminars with St. Thomas journalism students.

Prior to joining The Globe and Mail, MacGregor wrote for the National Post, Ottawa Citizen, Macleans, Toronto Star and The Canadian Magazine. He has won most of the writing awards in Canada including the National Newspaper Award and National Magazine Award.

The author of more than 30 books, he has won or been short listed for numerous national awards. A Life In the Bush, a memoir of growing up in Algonquin Park, won the Rutstrum Award for the best North American wilderness book as well as a Canadian Authors’ Award. Home Team: Fathers, Sons and Hockey was nominated for the Governor General’s Award. He is currently at work on a book on Canada and Canadians for Penguin Canada.

The Dalton Camp Lecture in Journalism is a partnership between St. Thomas, CBC Radio and the Dalton Camp Endowment in Journalism, a $1.5 million initiative to enhance the education of journalism students. The lecture has featured Joe Schlesinger, June Callwood and Naomi Klein.
