CHAIR OF STUDIES IN CANADIAN CITIZENSHIP AND HUMAN RIGHTS
Purpose:
The Chair of Studies in Canadian Citizenship and Human Rights has as its purpose the advancement of citizenship and human rights education.
In general terms the Chair, which was launched during the 1994-95 academic year, seeks to provide an impetus for citizenship and human rights education and research within the Atlantic Human Rights Centre. The immdediate impact will be experienced by the academic communities of St. Thomas University and the University of New Brunswick. This would be achieved through courses taught on campus by appointees to the Chair and the activities which are undertaken by the Chair and the Atlantic Human Rights Centre.
Specific Objectives of the Chair include the following:
- To conduct courses in the field of citizenship and human rights;
- To assist in the establishment of an inter-disciplinary and cross-faculty teaching linkages in the area of citizenship and human rights education;
- To undertake, encourage and facilitate research in the field of human rights and citizenship;
- To develop and evaluate human rights and citizenship curricula at the school and post-secondary levels of education;
- To develop and evaluate pedagogical material suitable at the school and post-secondary levels of education;
- To conduct research in such areas as issues of the citizen's rights and responsibilities arising from the implementation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms;
- To generally promote and stimulate informed thinking about human rights and citizenship and Canadian society through excellence in analysis and research;
- To conduct specialized seminars of a continuing education nature for the ongoing professional development of various groups such as teachers, human rights workers, lawyers, judegs, police, doctors and journalists;
- To develop teachers' training and adult education programmes in the area of citizenship and human rights education;
- To be available as a resource person for the in-service professional development training of teachers in the area of citizenship and human rights education;
- To organize workshops and conferences for both specialist and non-specialist groups in the field of citizenship and human rights education and to promote assistance in similar activities by others;
- To serve as a resource person for organizations, groups and individuals working in the human rights and citizenship field.
Specific activities of the Chair undertaken in pursuit of its objectives are therefore in the areas of teaching, research and community service. The emphasis of thrust will often be determined by the special talent of a given appointee to the Chair.
