Welcome

Dr. Daniel O'Brien
President, St. Thomas University

Good morning. This workshop today sponsored by the Atlantic Human Rights Centre will examine a very important topic. The role of the teacher has always been a complex role, likely to become even more complex with the pressures, new understandings and respect to the multicultural reality. Today you will be probing some of the legal dimensions of multiculturalism, but move beyond that to consideration of core personal dimensions and issues associated with multicultural experience in the classrooms. I hope that by the end of the day you will have reformulated your position, you will gain in wisdom and insight with respect to the way you discharge your various responsibilities in the classroom. I am sorry that I am unable to stay on and share some of the early insights of the program, but other responsibilities beckon me. So I wish you luck and welcome again. Thank you.
