Team Tryout Information 2009 FALL SEASON COMPETITION The Cross Country Running men compete in the ACAA and the CCAA in an 8km race, while the women compete in a 5km race. The St. Thomas University Cross Country team is coming off a very successful 2008 season. The team has expanded to more than twenty runners who, at a variety of levels of fitness, have committed to training, made amazing improvements, and bonded together well. During the team camp held Sept 2nd, 3rd, and 4th at Camp Medley, both groups were introduced to nutrition, training, shoe, and motivational clinics, as well as participated in daily strength, speed, and mileage training sessions. Only one male athlete graduated in 2008, and the team is looking to improve on its 2nd place finish at the ACAA Championships from the past 2 years. Leading the way is men’s team Captain and 2008 ACAA bronze medalist Zachary Nicholson who, after a good summer of training with Coach Scott Davis, is hungrier than ever to capture his first ACAA team and individual titles. However with 2 runners returning from the summer with non-running related injuries, the team will be looking from the walk-on talent pool to step up and challenge for the key 2nd, 3rd, and 4th runner positions. On the women’s side, the team is losing 4 of its top 6 runners from the 2008 season to graduation, including women’s team Captain and 2007 and 2008 gold medalist Nicole Badry, who will be competing with the University of Ottawa team this year while completing her law degree studies. 2007 and 2008 ACAA silver medalist Olivia Long is looking strong from another solid year of training and will be carrying the duties of women’s team Captain in leading the women’s squad this year. Olivia is looking to fulfill her ardent quest of capturing an ACAA gold medal. Other returning athletes are also looking strong, in particular look for Nicole LeBlanc, and sisters Sarah and Anna Galvin who have put in some solid summers of training to improve quickly and join Olivia in the front pack. Recruitment has been strong on the women’s side with both Sarah Peel from the Hampton, NB area, and Bridget Yard from Timmins, ON joining the team in their rookie season. Look for both Sarah and Bridget to represent the Tommies in a big way in the years to come. Challenging for the 5th and 6th spots on the team will be Rébeka Frasier-Chiasson and Nikki Gillingham.
