Students for Sustainability
Who are we?
A group of students committed to coordinating year-round sustainability awareness campaigns and activities and having a good time in the process!
How did it all start?
During the 2006 fall term, several students from the Environmental Studies department recognized a need for organizing simple local actions in order to address some of the issues we were learning and becoming increasingly worried about. By January of the following term, a first meeting was held composed of nearly thirty students with a range of ideas for how we could all together address our environmental concerns. Suggestions ranged from promoting two-sided printing on campus to conducting research on the feasibility of emerging renewable energy technologies! : )
Over the next few weeks our group’s members focussed down to about one third of the original number and committed itself to a selected few achievable campaigns for the rest of the term.
In that time, three students attended a Campus Sustainability Conference put on by Sierra Youth Coalition at Dalhousie University in Halifax. This helped direct our efforts and showed us that students at other campuses were trying to address how to become more sustainable communities.
Students for Sustainability are now in their 2nd year of operations and are constantly keeping active by networking, raising awareness and finding better ways to promote sustainability.
How can people get involved?
