First Year Liason

Justine MacLean

Hello,

My name is Justine MacLean and I am running for the post of First Year Student Liaison.  It is, obviously, my first year here at STU and I’m planning on majoring in psychology.  I hope that you will find me a great candidate for a few reasons.

First of all, I have experience.  Throughout high school, I participated in a variety of committees, and was also an active member of the student council almost every year.  I have helped organise many different activities, from fairs and jam nights to dances and hot potato contests, but I also took part in decision-making, and reflection upon the successfulness, and sometimes unsuccessfulness, of our choices.

I firmly believe in the “by the people, for the people” philosophy of democracy.  I would love to hear any suggestions you have that could help make our first year the best it can possibly be.  If I am elected, please do not hesitate to stop me and spill your opinions, proposals and even devious plans!

I am a very determined, enthusiastic worker, and I would love to make your ideas, be they little or big, a reality.

Thank you,
Justine MacLean

Ryan Mitchell

Greetings, to the Saint Thomas Student's Union!

My name is Ryan Mitchell, from Truro NS, and I am a first year student planning on majoring in Journalism, with either a double major, or a minor, in Political Science. As all other first year students were, I was quite nervous, and doubting how my experience at Saint Thomas would be. However, with the way things have gone thus far, the future sure looks bright!

Coming to STU is a major lifestyle change for many people, and I think with the way things have been, many students are beginning to release their true personalities, and settle in, to what eventually will become a "new life". With the way things are looking up now, I believe my contributions to the Saint Thomas Student's Union within the First Year Liaison position, would help ease these transitions for other first year students. With the help of many others, we all have the potential to make this year, a year to remember.

As an added note, good luck to all other candidates!

Ryan Mitchell

Anu Thomas

Hi All.

It's that exciting time of the year when you get to meet new people, do new things and learn to love it all (well, it's not like we have much of a choice). Let me introduce myself, I'm Anu Thomas-first year student at STU-from India/Ethiopia(how random is that?). And I'm a trying for the position of 'first year student liaison'.For me the transition from school to University is quite big. For one, EVERYTHING is new: The culture, the city, the people, the atmosphere and even the sense of humour (so don't worry, you're not the only one who doesn't get my jokes.)

But these are the exact reasons I want to be part of the Student Union....everything is completely new and I love it, I enjoy being a part of this University and want to do all that I can to express my gratitude for the wonderful opportunities it continues to provide!!I also want to know more about each and everyone of you and all that you have to share!! I promise to lend an attentive ear and a supportive hand anytime throughout our years at STU!!

Thank you.

Anu Thomas

First Year Aquinian Board of Directors Rep

Alex Solak

Alex Solak, of Halifax NS, began his interest in journalism during his grade 11 year at the now non-existent St. Patrick’s High School. Always an avid writer, Alex had produced an article he thought worthy of the attention of the entire student body. But, much to his dismay, St. Patrick’s did not have any functioning student newspaper. At the discovery of this (to him) blatantly obvious problem he followed the only reasonable course of action: He started his own paper. Serving as editor-in-chief, main photographer, arts director, business manager and distribution manager taught him much about the internal workings of the print media. Fifteen issues and approximately 30 000 pages of print later Alex graduated from St. Pat’s.

After spending 9 adventure-filled months traveling across Canada with the Katimavik program, Alex spent a short time at St. Mary’s University in Halifax studying business management. During his short stay Alex was a regular contributor to the university paper and was awarded the position of News Editor.

This year Alex intends to follow his true calling. In September he began his first year of study at St. Thomas University with hope of joining their prestigious journalism programme.

  One Year Student Senator

Jon DeCoste

Hi! My name is Jon DeCoste, and I am running for the position of One Year Student Senator. I am also a third year student taking a political science and history double major. I know that I would be a very effective representative for the student body on the University Senate. Having served on the Students’ Representative Council last academic year as the Chatham Hall Representative, I have plenty of experience representing students and helping them deal with problems big and small. Serving on the University Senate would provide a new challenge for me, but one that I know I am ready for. I have had excellent working relationships with all of my professors thus far, so working with the department chairs and other administrative positions is something I am fully comfortable doing. I also have had excellent working relationships with the virtually all of the current Students’ Representative Council from my term there last year. Bringing issues from the SRC to the University Senate is something I know I can do, I want to do, and I hope you will elect me to do. Vote Jon DeCoste for your One Year Student Senator!

  Off Campus

Carlos Game

Hello everybody:

My name is Carlos Game and I am a fourth year student with a major in Psychology. I am running for the position of Off-Campus Representative. I am an easy going guy with a wide open mind, and always smiling. I have previous experience being a representative as I was in the house committee for Chatham Hall for two years and this summer I worked as the Welcome Week Chair organizing the events that took place this first week of September. But this resume is not what I want you to look at. I want to represent the off-campus students because I feel that there are so many things we can do together in order to have a good year. I want to be there to hear all your comments and suggestions. I want to work for you and represent you in the SRC. I have different ideas for activities, but as I said I am open to hear from you. So if you have any questions or suggestions feel free to come t me and ask. I am all ears! Thank you.

Virgina Wilbur

Hi! My name is Virginia Wilbur and I'm a fourth year student completing a double major in English and History. I'm running for the position of Off Campus Rep with the Student's Union because I love to be involved. I was the Social Rep on the Rigby Hall House Committee for the past two years and I would love the chance to become engaged with the university from the off campus side of things. So when you come out to vote, I hope that you'll consider me as one of the representatives for our off campus students!
