Women’s Basketball Team Welcomes Two New Players for 2010-2011 Season

The STU Tommies women’s basketball team is pleased to announce two new players for the 2010-2011 basketball season.

Madyson Williams is coming to St. Thomas from Dalhousie High School where she was a multisport athlete. She was named an New Brunswick Interscholastic Athletics Association All Star the last two seasons and served as team captain for both her basketball and soccer teams. She was also her team’s leading scorer and a member of the 2010 New Brunswick Canada Games basketball team that competed in Prince Edward Island.

She has been awarded a Student Leaders Scholarship as well as a guaranteed entrance scholarship to attend St. Thomas.

“We are very excited that Madyson has decided to join the Tommies,” says head coach Fred Connors. “She has an incredible work ethic and love for the game of basketball that will allow her to achieve great things in our program, we believe she will be a great fit both athletically and academically.”

“Her toughness and aggression will be a great asset on the defensive end of the floor, and her shooting skills and intelligence will add to the offensive. We are looking forward to working with Madyson and watching her develop,” he added.

Also joining the Tommies is Olivia Dobbelsteyn from Fredericton High School.

Olivia has been a member of the Black Kats basketball team since grade 10 and was leading scorer this past season. She was recipient of the Bill Fletcher Award, named an NBIAA All Star, and female athlete of the month at FHS in March. Olivia has been a member of the Basketball New Brunswick provincial program as well, playing for both the under-15 and under-16 teams. She has been awarded an entrance scholarship to attend St. Thomas.

“Olivia was one of the top shooters in the province this year,” says Connors. “She has an ability to put the ball in the basket and has very good court vision.”

He adds that Olivia is an underrated defender and a team player. “We struggled to score the ball at times last year and Olivia may be able to come in and add to our scoring punch. And coming from FHS, we know she has been coached well by coach Cotter and coach Hazlett".

The Tommies are coming off a very good season, where they enjoyed a 10-game winning streak en route to an 18-3 record. The team’s focus on defence was again key to their success, with the second best defensive total in the country. Although the championship ACAA game would see the Tommies drop a hard fought game, their drive and determination did not go unnoticed. With seven players returning from a silver medal team, the stage has been set for another deep Tommies playoff run in 2011.

“With three seniors leaving who were experienced ball handlers and played major roles in our program, we have lost a lot this spring. At the same time, these two young players are excited to be joining our program and are really looking forward to getting things started in September,” Connors said.

He noted that both players are embracing the workouts provided for them over the spring and summer and are showing the drive and work ethic to be successful in the ACAA.

STU Tommies Weekend Summary

The STU Tommies women's basketball team locked up 2nd place and a 1st round playoff bye going 1-1 this weekend. On Saturday, a showdown with the 3rd place MTA Mounties would be one of the best defensive efforts of the season for the Tommies as they won 64-27. The first quarter was a physical affair with both teams playing tough defence early on. The quarter would end with STU leading 11-8. The Tommies defence would then begin to dominate the game as they held the Mounties to 1 basket in 10 minutes and win the Quarter 13-2 and take a 24-10 lead into the half. The third quarter would be the same as the Tommies continued to dominate on the defensive end, but their offence would start to flow as they outscored the Mounties 24-4 in the third enroute to the victory. Amy Andow led the way for STU with a team high 17 points and 6 rebounds. Kerrin Everett would add 11 points while Heather Atherton added 8 points and 5 steals. Ashley Bawn would also chip in with 8 points.

On Sunday, seniors Kerrin Everett, Amy Andow, Melissa Russwurm, and Danielle Moffat would all be recognized for their four years of dedication to the STU program. The Tommies would find themselves involved in the best game of the season as they hosted the undefeated MSVU Mystics. Both teams would come out firing as MSVU led after the first quarter 19-17. But both teams would get back to their defensive styles as the halftime ended with a 27-23 MSVU lead. In the third, the Tommies started to gain some momentum as they won the 3rd Q 14-11 setting up a tight fourth quarter. Both teams hit key shots as they went back and forth. Unfortunately, the Tommies were unable to handle the ball at key moments and found themselves on the wrong side of a 53-47 final. Heather Atherton led the way with 12 points while Amy Andow added 9. Jillian Lamoreau led with 8 rebounds while Kerrin Everett had 5 steals.

STU Tommies Weekend Summary

The Tommies women's basketball team improved their record to 15-2 and are now one win away from locking up a 1st round bye in playoffs with a pair of road wins on the weekend.

In the first game, STU played a very physical team from Holland College. The road legs seemed to be a factor early on as the Tommie’s defence struggled early as the score was tied 7-7. However, the offence started to become more fluid and the Tommies got some outside jumpers to take a 23-12 lead after the 1st Quarter. In the second, the defence would start to get more control over the game and the Tommies expanded the lead to 41-22 at the half. A slow third quarter saw the Tommies out-score the Hurricanes 14-11 but in the 4th the Tommies would again make a good run and win by a final score of 74-43.  The Tommies were led by Jill Lamoreau with team highs of 20 points, 7 rebounds and 5 steals, while Amy Andow shook off a hard knock to the head to put home 11 points along with 5 rebounds. Kathleen McCann put in some great minutes off the bench, chipping in with 9 points.

On Sunday, the Tommies would travel to Moncton to play a very energized and hungry Crandall Hurricane team. STU came out playing hard, but Crandall matched their intensity and shot the ball very well from the 3 point line as the score was 18-17 for STU at the half. The Tommies defence would start doing a better job closing out the Crandall shooters and the offence would continue to flow as the Tommies took a 40-27 lead into the half. Some minor adjustments and some great shooting in the second half would allow the Tommies to score a season high 57 second-half points and they sprinted out to a 27-9 third Quarter and would finish strong with a 30-11 4th quarter. Final score STU 97-CU 47. STU was led by the remarkable shooting of Renee LeBlanc, who was 5/5 from the 3 point line and 6/6 from the foul line for a 23 point effort. She also added a team high 6 steals. Amy Andow would have another solid outing for the Tommies as she had 18 points and a team high 5 rebounds. Danielle Moffat chipped in with 13 points and a very solid defensive effort for the Tommies.

STU was led by Heather Atherton with 18 points, 3 assists and 6 steals while Kerrin Everrett and Jill Lamoreau dropped in 12 each. Amy Andow had a solid shooting game, knocking home 11 for the Tommies.

On Sunday, a slow start by STU was overcome in the 2nd quarter as they pushed the tempo and ran their way to a 29 point 2nd quarter and a 42-15 halftime lead. The second half would see the Tommies defensive intensity drop, but their offence continued to move the ball and shoot well from the perimeter as they won by a final score of 80-43. Amy Andow continued her hot shooting as she dropped 13 for the Tommies to go along with 3 steals, while Heather Atherton had 12 points and a team high 8 boards. STU came out with a tremendous burst of energy in the first quarter as jumped out to a quick 25-6 lead and didn't led up as they spread the lead to 45-14 at the half. STU Tommies Weekend Summary

The Tommies Women's basketball team are enjoying their home court stand as they went 2-0 this weekend to stay undefeated at South gym this season. The Tommies have not lost a home game in the last two years, and were up for a tough battle against MTA in a second-place showdown.

The Tommies came out firing in the first quarter as they built a 15-7 lead with some tough defence and good ball movement on offence. The second quarter would see a similar 10 minutes as the Tommies outscored the Mounties 15-8 to take a 30-15 lead into the half.

The defensive battle would get tighter in the second half as both teams played very physical basketball and showed they both wanted to win this basketball game. MTA's defence held the Tommies to only 6 third quarter points, but the Tommies stingy defence kept MTA to 9 to make the score 36-24 heading into the fourth quarter. Both teams offence finally started to get into a groove as MTA made two very good runs at the Tommies, but the Tommies experience and leadership stayed composed as they hung on for a very tough fought 51-36 win. The Tommies went to the line 33 times while MTA went 32 times. The key to the game was the Tommies rebounding as they defeated MTA on the glass 46-37 while MTA turned the ball over 34 times compared to STU's 21.

Leading the way for STU was 1st year guard Renee LeBlanc with 16 points and 6 rebounds, while Kerrin Everett had 9 points. Jill Lamoreau pulled down 13 rebounds to go along with her 7 points. Tremendous ball pressure by Everett, Danielle Moffat and Melissa Russwurm allowed for Heather Atherton to get into passing lanes and collect a staggering 9 steals in this game. It was a true defensive team effort for the Tommies.

On Sunday, the Tommies focused on bringing a good deal of energy to the gym as they prepared for Crandall University. The Tommies would jump out to a quick 22-8 lead and would carry that momentum into the half leading 40-17. The Tommies shot 43% from the field in the first half.

The second half would see much of the same as the Tommies would outscore CU 31-16 en route to a 71-33 win. STU won the battle on the glass 41-39 and turned CU over 37 times to the Tommies 16. The Tommies shot 71% from the foul line as well. STU's team defensive effort was great all game long, but tremendous pressure on the ball by Danielle Moffat took CU out of their offensive rhythm and allowed for STU to be very aggressive in the passing lanes. STU's offence was led by Jill Lamoreau with 19 points and a team high 8 boards while Amy Andow finished well with 10 points and 5 boards while Renee LeBlanc chipped in with 9 points. Another solid outing by 3rd year guard Heather Atherton saw her grab 7 boards to go along with 6 points and 2 steals.

STU Tommies Weekend Summary

The Tommies played their first home game of 2010 against the UNBSJ Seawolves. A scrappy team from UNBSJ battled with a sluggish Tommies team to stay tied at 12 after the 1st Quarter of play. The second Quarter saw the Tommies start to get their offence rolling but would allow SJ to score 15 more points to make the half time score 34-27 in favor of STU. Halftime allowed the Tommies to gather themselves and re-focus on their team goals and it showed in the second half.

Strong leadership shown by the senior starters, along with 4th year guard Melissa Russwurm really turned the energy around in the 2nd half. 1st year Guard Renee Leblanc also came off the bench and shot 8 for 10 from the field to spread the gap in the 3rd Quarter as the Tommies outscored SJ 26-5 in the 3rd and 19-7 in the 4th. The second half was much more indicative of how the Tommies can play when they are focused and playing together. They outrebounded SJ 43-29. STU was led by LeBlanc's 20 point effort while Kerrin Everett and Danielle Moffatt had 10 each. Amy Andow led the Tommies with 8 rebounds to go along with her 8 points while Heather Atherton led the team with 10 steals and 4 assists.

STU will play their next game this Saturday against MTA at 2:00 in a second place showdown and Crandall University on Sunday at 2:00.
