Clean sweep in Halifax The Tommies return to NB with two wins, 4 points and a little breathing room between them and fourth place. STU woke up this morning just two points back of X and two ahead of Dal in the race atop the AUS Women's Hockey standings. After a late wakeup call, breakfast and a little stroll along the Historical Properties the Tommies headed to Dal to attempt to tame the Tigers. The St Thomas fans were ou in force as many friends and family had travelled down to see the Tommies. We would like to note a couple of fans. Ray Boudreau was in town from Spruce Grove, Alberta to visit Catherine and watch her play. Also, former President of ST Thomas Dr. Dan O'Brien an his wife Valerie were present to cheer on the Green and Gold. We hope they were suitably impressed with this year's squad. To the game and what a game it was. The Tommies hit the ice and it was not long before a penalty was called. Luckily the PK units had been working extremely well. They would be tested this day. After killing off the first penalty 23 seconds in they would have to kill off three in the first period as the calls seemed quite one-sided. With the PP time Dal ended up outshooting the Tommies 12-6 but at even strength STU carried the play and hemmed in the Tigers. With a break at intermission the teams drew up their game plans for the second. The Tommies was basically more of the same and that is what they did. Despite Dal getting three more power play opportunities the Tommies outshot their hosts 11-3 which just shows how effective the penalty killers were. And at the 12:36 mark a puck would get directed to the net and would eventually be potted by Jillian Coughlin (Lyse Rossignol, Dominique Bernier). This boosted the bench. They all knew they were getting lots of pressure and felt it was just matter of time. Onto the third with a one goal lead. Dal attemptd a strong start to the period and got into the Tommies zone on their first shift but once STU established their forecheck Dal was hard pressed to get out of their zone for a strong attack. At 9:23 of the third Lyse Rossignol would deflect a point shot from Kathleen Boyle setup by Dominique Bernier. This would be an insurance marker that the Tommies would never need. Julia Sharun would have the solution for everything Dal through at her and would get her first shutout of the regular season. The Tommies outshot Dal 29-20 overall and were 100% on the PK and 20% on the PP. This game was one of the best the team has played this year as they played extremely well on both sides of the puck, had great special teams, limited the opponents scoring chances and were focused in all aspects of their game. This bodes well heading into this weekend as the ever improving UPEI Panthers will be in to play on Saturday at 2:00pm and the Mount Allison Mounties will be visiting on Sunday at 2:00pm as well.
