Tommies take game 1 in weekend road trip The STU Women's team started a pivotal Nova Scotian road trip by taming the SMU Huskies 4-1. From the drop of the puck the Tommies showed they were ready to play. Chances were exchanged early on but the Tommies forechecked relentlessly and this proved beneficial as at 2:34 Dominique Bernier converted a 2 on 1 on a pass from Lyse Rossignol and Michelle Goguen. Exactly 6 minutes later Jillian Coughlin (Kathleen Boyle) kept on a 2 on 1 and fired a shot high glove to beat the SMU keeper, Jillian MacIsaac. The Tommies weren't finished though as with 4 minutes remaining in the frame and on the Power Play Catherine Boudreau (Lucrece Nussbaum, Jillian Coughlin) tipped in a shot as it was fired for the net. Shots favored SMU in the first 14-12. In the second the Huskies would get on the board though. After both teams exchanged numerous power play opportunities and some interesting icing and offside calls, the Huskies potted a shot from the point that struck a stick on the way to the net. SMU seemed to get a little jump from this and with more power play chances they began to pressure the visitors. But STU held strong and the penalty killing crew led by Renee Edison and Charity Walls would end up being perfect on the day killing off 8 of 8 chances. The period ended with St Thomas leading by two, 3-1. Shots in the second favored SMU 12-10. The third would prove to be a test as the Tommies started the period killing off a 5 on 3. After managing to hold the Huskies at bay the Tommies drew some inspiration by their improved special teams play and would strike a final time on the power play as Sarah Belmore jumped in off the faceoff and deked two players before depositing the puck past the SMU goalkeeper. The Tommies finished the game with 28 shots on goal to SMU's 38. Julia SHarun played an inspired game in net and made some quality stops throughout to keep the Tommies in the game. With the win STU moves into sole possesion of third place two points up on Dal and two points back of StFX. This sets up an important battle tomorrow as the Tommies remain in Halifax to play the Dal Tigers at 3:00pm on Sunday.
